Anna Regina / Anna Regina

Q111

(2006)

The remarkable author Rút Lichnerová chose the life and career of the renowned cartographer and polymath Samuel Mikovíni as the subject-matter of her book and his extraordinary wife Anna Regina, as the protagonist. After the marriage, she moved with her husband to Banská Štiavnica, a mining town shadowed by the surrounding mountains, but at the same time glittery as the gold and silver found in the mines. Because of Mikovíni´s social status, Anna Regina is respected and admired, but she also arouses envy and public nuisance. A wife and a mother, she has to struggle to save face, to preserve her femininity and her own status. But she also has to fight for the love of her husband who is constantly busy with his scientific work for the queen Maria Theresa.
